What is Aikido?

Aikido is a Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba who is typically referred to as O’Sensei, meaning Great Teacher. Literally translated, Aikido means ‘the way of harmonizing energy’. The fundamental basis of Aikido allows an individual to blend (harmonize) with and redirect an opponent’s attack (energy).

Classes are taught in the traditional manner involving Japanese etiquette and terminology. Curriculum consists of falling techniques, deflections, throwing techniques, and joint manipulations and locks. Atemi (strikes) are also incorporated into the curriculum.

Classes are taught from a co-operative stand point between the uke (the attacker) and nage (person receiving the attack). Beginner’s start off with slow speed attacks and gradually work their way up to full speed, honest attacks.

Students learn to defend themselves from a variety of attacks such as punches, kicks, and grabs and to also learn to defend themselves against multiple attackers.
